Spring break of my freshman year was supposed to be filled with Peruvian exploration. I was expecting to eat foods I had never heard of realize how much Spanish I have forgotten since high school, but plans change. Due to COVID-19, my faculty-led study abroad trip was canceled, but I was still able to complete the related course. We learned about Peru’s history, how the culture has developed over time, and what life in Peru is like today. However, the true focus of our class was the social, environmental, and economic issues the country faces and how these issues relate to problems all over the world. We connected these specific issues to global poverty and researched ways for all people to support struggling communities anywhere in the world. Paying special attention to Peru, I researched the global water crisis that currently affects millions of people every day. It is unrealistic to think every person can travel to Peru and build new waterways, but in my final research paper, I proposed simple actions everyone can take. Although this experience was centered around a trip I was unable to take, I feel that I gained knowledge I can apply to numerous current issues.
